Alteronce Gumby
Abstract artist Alteronce Gumby is known for his vivid interstellar paintings that emerge from his profound fascination with the cosmos and theories of energy. After graduating from Hunter with his BFA in 2014, Gumby earned an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art in 2016. Gumby is now an award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited at renowned galleries and museums such as Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone Gallery, and Camden Arts Centre.
Gumby credits the experiential learning he received at Hunter with turning him into the artist he is today. “Going to a museum is so much better than seeing art in a slide show, and having the Guggenheim, the Met, and the Frick in walking distance of the college was really enlightening for me,” he said. The program introduced him to the importance of feedback from others in the art world. “Once you’re out in the real world, you need relationships with curators and gallery owners in order to be successful,” he said.
Recent exhibitions featuring Gumby’s work include It Was All a Dream (Koki Arts, Tokyo, 2022), On Earth as it is in Heaven (Art-in-Buildings, New York, 2021), Cross Colours (Bode Projects, Berlin, 2021), and My Favorite Color is a Rainbow (Parrasch/ Heijnen Gallery, Los Angeles, 2020). He has won awards including the Austrian American Foundation/Seebacher Prize for Fine Arts, and the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship.
